Mawamba Lodge  

On a sandbank in Tortuguero on Costa Rica’s northeastern Caribbean coast, tucked between the Tortuguero Canals and the Caribbean Sea. Accessible only by boat or plane and within walking distance of Tortuguero town, this family-friendly rainforest lodge puts wildlife, canals and remote beaches at your doorstep.

Renovated, wood-clad modules blend rustic charm with lush rainforest vegetation and manicured gardens. Rooms range from cozy standard units with private bathrooms, ceiling fans and garden-view balconies to more private superior rooms with king beds (superior rooms are adults-only); there are eight family rooms with two queen beds. Expect daily housekeeping, in-room safety boxes and plenty of bird- and wildlife sightings right outside your balcony.

Soak in a swimming pool and whirlpool, chill at the bar and lounge, or explore themed frog, butterfly and iguana gardens. The property has a souvenir shop, pool table, sand-volleyball court, cafeteria and beach access (note: swimming at the beach is not recommended). Active options include day and night tours, kayaking, fishing, canoe trips, spa services and night hikes, plus sunset or dinner cruises aboard the floating Katonga restaurant (extra charge). Two on-site restaurants serve buffet meals that are included with many packages, while the unique Katonga floating restaurant offers cruises, sunset dinners and lunches by reservation (not included). A cafeteria serves snacks from 9am–6pm and there's an on-site bar for cocktails at sunset.
