20 Things To Do In Old Forge That Even Your Grumpy Dad Will Enjoy
There are places that seem to hum quietly under your skin — where the air feels older, the trees taller, and time itself a little slower. Old Forge, tucked deep in the Adirondacks, is one of them.
It sits along the first of the Fulton Chain of Lakes — a connected series of eight lakes that form one of the region’s most scenic waterways. The town lies entirely inside Adirondack Park, the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States, offering direct access to hundreds of miles of forest trails, rivers, and mountain vistas.
Historically, Old Forge began as a 19th-century logging and mining community before evolving into one of the earliest tourism hubs in upstate New York. Today, it remains a year-round outdoor destination known for boating, fishing, hiking, and its extensive snowmobile trail network. In fact, it’s often called the “Snowmobile Capital of the East,” drawing thousands of winter riders each year.
Beyond its outdoor appeal, Old Forge serves as a cultural and recreational center for the southern Adirondacks, home to attractions like the Enchanted Forest Water Safari (New York’s largest water park), the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, and a lively Main Street lined with lodges, diners, and local craft shops. It’s a town where wilderness and community blend seamlessly — making Old Forge both a starting point and a destination in its own right.

Did the Fall Gateway ride up to Old Forge. It was wonderful! You get a brochure with information on the historical sights along the way. 11. Enchanted Forest Water Safari
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Rick Schallert
This place is awesome and more than we expected. We took my daughter for her 7th birthday celebration. It's not only a great water park, it has a small zoo, several dry rides, a train, sky ride, 30 minute circus, and more. You can also bring your own food and drink! We went during a rather cool spell (68°), which isn't necessarily ideal for a water park. However we enjoyed the dry portion of the park first and saved the water rides for until after lunch. It was a little cooler than idea, the cool weather resulted in virtually no waiting for the water slides. According to the signs, on busy days, lines can result in an hour or more wait on some of the popular water slides! During our visit , we literally ran from slide to slide with no waiting!
