From Taylor Swift to Star Trek, Niche Cruises Are on the Rise

News Aug 22, 2024

Enduring five consecutive nights aboard a Taylor Swift-themed voyage in the Caribbean might sound unbearable to some, but for Aubreigh Gniotczynski, a 26-year-old Texan, it represents the ultimate fantasy. Ms. Gniotczynski, alongside her husband who has grown to appreciate Swift through marriage, has invested over $1,500 each to partake in evenings filled with karaoke and costume parties, despite the event not being endorsed by Swift herself. In anticipation, she has devoted time to crafting friendship bracelets adorned with the singer's lyrics to distribute among her fellow travelers.

A Resurgence in Cruise Popularity

The allure of cruising has surged anew, with projections indicating that approximately 35.7 million travelers will set sail in 2024, marking a 6% increase from 2019, as reported by the Cruise Lines International Association. In a bid to entice newcomers, operators are dabbling in theme-based voyages, according to travel consultant Jessica Malerman, who is orchestrating the Swift-themed escapade set to occupy 199 cabins aboard a Royal Caribbean International ship.

A Spectrum of Themed Voyages

The variety of themed cruises ranges from those inspired by television series like Star Trek and The Golden Girls to others that revolve around musical groups such as Kiss and The Beach Boys. Additionally, the lineup includes numerous genre-specific music cruises, ranging from country to reggae, and even rock and jazz. Special-interest cruises also cater to unique hobbies and communities, with offerings like Chris Jericho’s Rock ‘N’ Wrestling Rager at Sea and the High Seas Rally for motorcycle aficionados, as well as faith-based options like Kosherica and Bountiful Travel. Moreover, adult-themed cruises such as Desire, Temptation, and Bare Necessities cater to those seeking a more risqué adventure at sea.

Targeted Appeals for Diverse Audiences

These specialized cruises attract a broad demographic. Older travelers often seek a nostalgic experience, says Chris Hearing from Entertainment Cruise Productions, noting the appeal of reliving music from one’s youth, like their 80s music-themed cruise. Meanwhile, younger cruisers may find solace in the less critical environment of ships compared to traditional festival settings, as noted by Gavin Simcoe, the coordinator of the Emo’s Not Dead Cruise, which mainly attracts fans around 35 years old. To draw in even younger attendees, he integrates acts from the early 2000s with current artists, proving that sometimes, stirring things up can indeed be beneficial.
